Ok, so full disclosure…… Esther and I were literally destined to meet one way or another. Thank goodness for the power of Instagram to bring us together this past Fall. As they say, it all goes down in the DM’s, including meeting new friends! Esther is that powerhouse of woman who has a clear vision, a strong work ethic, and a passion for what she does that is infectious. She inspires everyone in her ever growing circle to make connections, think big, and to live life without reservation. To say that my life is that much better for meeting her is an understatement. TODAY she is launching her latest publication (she is a media veteran), Cherry Creek Fashion and I am SO excited about it. Cherry Creek Fashion is an idea that has been incubating for a long time, and I know it will be an instant hit as she highlights the best and most modern aspects of this fashion destination.
Esther, this is not the first fashion publication you have launched, what initially sparked your interest in fashion journalism? What was it like getting your Masters degree in Fashion Journalism at the London College of Fashion?
Annie, I am blushing! I should print that intro onto a T-shirt and walk around wearing it everyday! I am so lucky to have met you! London was the only city I wanted to move to for university. The energy of the city, the vibrant and collaborative creative community and the exceptional educational programs at the London College of Fashion made it such an easy choice. Studying fashion in London was mind blowing. There is inspiration everywhere, especially on the streets. The English have a knack for throwing together charity shop finds, vintage items and designer pieces to create some of the most stylish looks. London College of Fashion taught me to think outside the box and have confidence in my vision. That lesson has been invaluable and I have used it to launch Cherry Creek Fashion. I also met my husband in London, so lots of wins there! Haaa
How does telling people’s stories through fashion and beauty inspire you and how do you want it to inspire your readers?
Fashion and beauty is so personal. We find out so much about a person through their clothing and beauty habits. I always want to peek inside people’s closets, bathroom products and their homes so I am doing it for the magazine! Haaaa. I am always inspired by other people’s fashion sense, I love getting style ideas from the way other people put outfits together. Hopefully the readers of the magazine will get inspiration from the stories and be encouraged to live their best life and show their personalities through their clothing. You feel so much more like yourself when you stay true to your style aesthetics with your clothing or home.
One of your strongest skills, one that I deeply admire, is your ability to reach out to people you find interesting and bring them into your network- often making connections between friends that have much in common. Where do you get your confidence?
Oh my! I think it just my Saint Lucian background and growing up in the Caribbean. In Saint Lucia, you can strike up a conversation with anyone anywhere. I love learning about people’s lives and their stories. Everyone has something interesting to say! I love meeting talented people and in Denver most people are so humble you really have to ask them lots of questions to learn about their fabulous new business venture. I find it so rewarding to connect people because I am so grateful for all of the wonderful persons that I have met here in Denver. The creative community is so welcoming and encouraging, I always want to pass that goodwill along!
Like so many of us Denver-ites, you have lived in many places before settling here. Growing up in St. Lucia, living in London, New York, San Francisco and now here, what do you think makes Denver unique?
Denver is a badass city with so many talented people doing fabulous things. I loved living in all of these cities but Denver has a mix of everything wonderful. The outdoor lifestyle, the nightlife and restaurant scene but most of all it feels like home to me. People here are so pleasant and nice, it blows my mind everyday. I believe in being nice and kind to others and Denver has that in spades.
What has drawn you to Cherry Creek in particular?
After living in all of these walkable cities, my husband and I really wanted to live in an area where we could have the same lifestyle. Cherry Creek is such a wonderful place to live, we walk to coffee, brunch, dinner and for shopping. It is also a great place to raise a family. It is such a great mix of locally owned businesses and international businesses.
What have been some of the challenges in putting together Cherry Creek Fashion, and what have been some of the most exciting discoveries?
This may sound weird but I haven’t really had any challenges so far! I have been doing this for a long time so I take things in my stride and always feel so incredibly lucky that I get to create my own magazine. Doing a weekly magazine is alot of work but it is so much fun. I enjoy the process! The most exciting discovery is all of the fascinating people that I am featuring. Not only are they so interesting but they are so nice as well!
How do you see Cherry Creek Fashion growing and how do you see it becoming a part of the community?
Hopefully Cherry Creek Fashion becomes the go to resource for people wanting to know more about the fashion industry in Cherry Creek. I really want to highlight all of the wonderful business here that employ alot of people. Fashion is creative and fun but let’s not forget that it is one of the biggest industries in the world providing income for many families. I want to support the industry and encourage people from all backgrounds to visit and enjoy Cherry Creek. I have to pint out the wonderful work that the Cherry Creek North BID is doing to promote the area.
